Guitar Strings Explained: Gauges, Materials & How Often to Change Them in the UAE

Dead strings make a good guitar sound cheap. Here is what to buy and how often to change them — especially in UAE humidity.

Gauges: light vs heavy

Lighter strings (.009–.042) are easier to press and bend, perfect for beginners and lead players. Heavier strings (.011–.052) give more volume and low end but need stronger fingers. When in doubt, start light.

Materials

Nickel-plated steel is the all-rounder for electric. Phosphor bronze is warm and full for acoustic; 80/20 bronze is brighter. Coated strings (like Elixir) cost more but last far longer — worth it in our climate.

How often to change

With AC and humidity in the UAE, strings lose their brightness faster. Casual players: every 2–3 months. Gigging or sweaty hands: every few weeks. If they look dull, feel rough, or won't stay in tune, it is time.
